The Story

What the gods took

A life. A name. A reason you were not told.

One

You wake

There is no light you recognise. No memory of the door you came through.

You are barely clothed. You own nothing. Far off, you can hear a city: voices, metal, the low noise of people who have been here a while.

You walk toward it, because there is nowhere else.

Two

You are not the first

The city is full of people who woke as you did. Each came from somewhere else. Each carries a power given to them, and none can say who gave it.

They speak of the gods. Not as myth. As landlords who have gone quiet.

Do not ask what the gods want. Ask what they are afraid of.

Three

The dark

One of the gods has turned. It does not rule the world. It feeds on it. Every monster in the wild came from its hand. Every dungeon is a tunnel it has dug toward the cities.

The gods did not summon you to worship. They summoned you to stand in the way.

Four

What you know is what you can do

The names of the gods, their offices, their powers and their intentions are not handed out. They are found: in ruins, in books, in what the dying say.

Those who learn more are rewarded for it. The darkness is not beaten by the strongest arm. It is beaten by the one who understands it.

The story will not stop here. It will deepen as the world does.
